Due to the construction of an artificial lake on the Cehotina River, the church had to be relocated and built again. Although not monumental in size, the monastery church is an architectural work worthy of attention. The outward simplicity of the monastery, which is more like a village house, is characteristic of churches erected during the Turkish domination when they weren’t supposed to attract attention.

It should also be noted that the monastery Dubočica is famous for the fact that the famous orthodox saint –  Saint Basil Miracle worker from Ostrog has served in the monastery for one period. So, people believe that if you visit the monastery Dubočica three times, it is the same as visiting the monastery Ostrog (monastery where are kept relics of Saint Basil).

After breakfast at 8 o’clock, we check out the hotel and travel towards Plav, a small town in northeastern Montenegro. We will visit a couple of amazing sites like Redzepagica’s Tower, The old Mosque, the Vezirova Mosque and the famous Ali-pasha springs!

Located in the centre of Plav, Redzepagic’s Tower represents the oldest house-defensive facility and the most striking monument in the town. It was built in 1671 by Hasan beg Redžepagić. At first, The Tower first had two floors with solid stone walls, a thickness of more than one meter, a guard tower and a loop. Later on, the third floor was made of wood, called “Čardak” (Turkish). On the sides are visible wooden structures – “erkeri”. The dimensions of the Tower are 7 m to 8 m. At the top of the Tower, it was possible to get in by way of an interior staircase, or of the outside entryway, which was used only during the day, so that during the night the tower would remain inaccessible.

Redzepagica's Tower in Plav MontenegroThe Old Mosque, or as it is still called in this city, the Čaršijska mosque, is the oldest and the most famous mosque in the Plav-Gusinje region. After the arrival of the Ottomans in this area, a fortress called Dizdarev Grad was built for the needs of the army, named after Zejnel-beg Dizdar, the founder of the fort. The establishment consists of rooms for the accommodation of soldiers, supplies, and weapons, libraries and other buildings.

The most imposing monument of Gusinje is definitely Vezirova Mosque. According to the tradition, it was built by the Skadar vizier from the Bushatlija family, at the beginning of his rule in this area in the 15th century.

If you come to Gusinje and don’t visit Ali-pasha Springs, it is like you have never visited Gusinje. Located in the Prokletije massif, at an altitude of 925 meters, they represent the largest permanent karst spring in Montenegro.

The springs are named after Ali-Pasha from Gusinje, a famous historical figure, who built a chardak next to the springs so that he could enjoy their beauty and the sweet freshness of their water.

This place became an important resting place for caravans and merchants on the way from Dubrovnik to Istanbul. Thus, people from various regions and cultures, in addition to sources, made deals and arranged shops.

Early in the morning, just after breakfast, we check out the hotel and continue our journey to the second country of this tour – Kosovo.

Travel through the attractive areas of Rozaje town and Hajla mountain.

Arrival at Peje, the third-largest town in Kosovo.

Time reserved for visiting the main city mosque – Bajrakli mosque from the 15th century. It was built by Sultan Fatih Mehmet Hani and is an Ottoman-style single-domed mosque with the oldest and highest dome in the town.

The town of Peja was widely known for its bazaar, constructed under the influence of the Ottomans. Although it was burned down during WW2, it was refurbished in 1999, so you can enjoy the typical oriental architecture and feel the spirit of the eastern markets (bazaar).

Our next stop will be in the Patriarchate of Peć, monastery complex near Peja, at the entrance of the river Pećka Bistrica in Rugova gorge. It was built from the third decade of the 13th century to the middle of the 14th century. The monastery is the largest mausoleum of Serbian archbishops and patriarchs, it holds the relicts of several prominent figures of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Manuscripts, icons and works of applied art from the 14th to the 19th century are kept in the treasury of exceptional value.
UNESCO recognized this centuries-old seat of Serbian archbishops and patriarchs in Peja, the meeting place of theologians, writers, artists and the smartest Serbs of the past, which preserves the rich artistic and ecclesiastical heritage, which resists invaders for more than seven centuries and preserves memories of the most glorious and difficult moments of Serbian history as a world heritage site and put it under the protection in 2006.

Patriarchate of Pec Kosovo Our next and last stop is another UNESCO site – Visoki Decani Monastery from the 15th century, founded by Saint Stefan Decanski whose relics are kept in the monastery. The church of the Decani monastery was built of marble squares in two colours. Due to its architectural complexity, the church represents a harmonious interweaving of elements of the Western – Romanesque and Gothic, and Eastern – Byzantine style with the already existing traditions of Serbian art. In terms of the number of characters and scenes, as well as the total painted surface, Dečani’s frescoes are at the forefront of Serbian painting of the Middle Ages. Its collection of manuscript books is priceless. UNESCO declared the Decani Monastery a World Heritage Site in 2004, stating that its frescoes are one of the most valuable examples of the so-called Renaissance Palaeologus in Byzantine painting and a valuable record of life in the fourteenth century.

It was built on a hill above Bistrica around which the suburbs developed, ie today’s city. The first fortification was built by the Byzantines, so that Serbian tsar Dušan Silni further expanded it, after which the Ottomans rebuilt it during their four and a half centuries of rule, giving it today’s appearance. This Kalaja Fortress sits proudly on a hilltop above the town and has a 43-step staircase hidden in a tunnel that connects to the river, giving you a great sense of discovery and view over the city.

Also, for one period it was the capital of Serbia, developed as a cultural, enlightening and educational centre of this area. Many schools have been opened there. During the Ottoman invasions, the town changed its appearance. A lot of mosques, caravanserai, bridges, bazaars delighted many popular travel writers and respectable people of that time.

Don’t forget to walk over the bridges, among which stands out Stone bridge, built under the Roman emperor Justinian I and rebuilt under the Ottomans. Kale fortress has been protecting the town since the 6th century. The memorial house of Mother Teresa, whose hometown was Skoplje, is also worth visiting. You will see the photos, memorabilia, and documents following Mother Teresa’s life and religious work. The old bazaar is the second largest in the Balkans, just after the one in Istanbul. Also, you will see active mosques /the most popular is Mustafa – pasha mosque with a clock tower from 16th century/ türbes (mausoleum tombs), converted hammams (bathhouses), churches /the most popular is the church of Saint Clement of Ohrid/, the Museum of Macedoniathe Museum of Modern Art, and several innsthe square of Pela, the Fountains etc.

This place is home to some medieval monasteries, caves, and a lot of species of endemic butterflies. The best thing to do is to take a boat trip to enjoy this beautiful place. To get to the caves, take a boat tour (takes about 2 hours in total) and then it’s a short walk through the caves where you can see a lot of dripstone pillar, stalagmites, stalactites, and deep holes. Or, hike to the St. Nikola Monastery at the steep path through the woods and bushes (take about 30 minutes) and when you arrive at the top is the view stunning from above.

DAY 10 Explore Ohrid and Ohrid’s Lake

After breakfast at the hotel, we explore the town which has existed since antiquity times when its name was Lychnidos. Some are saying that it existed even earlier. The Roman trade route to the Egnatia went through Lychnidos. The name Ohrid first mentioned in 879. It has been argued that the Cyrillic alphabet was developed in Ohrid by Sveti Kiril and Metodij. Ohrid was then an important cultural centre, and in the year 1000 was Ohrid for a short period the capital of Macedonia’s first Slavic empire under Tsar Samuil. In 1979, the city is listed by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage.

Traditional house in Ohrid-MacedoniaOhrid is now a tourist town with its many beautiful beaches and mountains on the horizon, but also for those interested in history. There are cobblestones from the Roman Empire, an amphitheatre from antiquity, as well as some of the oldest Byzantine frescoes. In the old part of Ohrid are a picturesque old bazaar with a market, Hamam, fountain and numerous workshops of old crafts and handicrafts shops and shops of Ohrid pearls, woodcarving workshops, workshops for painting Byzantine icons, workshops for the production of leather items, old Macedonian instruments and the famous Macedonian embroidery.

Ancient site Plaosnik with church of Saint Climent Ohrid MacedoniaLake Ohrid is very old and the deepest lakes in Europe. It was so unique and ancient flora and fauna that can be compared only to Lake Victoria in Africa and Lake Baikal in Siberia. In Ohrid Lake, you find a variety of trout (Ohridska pastrmka) that does not exist anywhere else in the world.

Boats on majestic Ohrid Lake Ohrid Macedonia

As an optional activity, we recommend a Saint Naum & Bay of Bones boat trip.

The Saint Naum Monastery is located 29km south of the town of Ohrid. It is named after its founder, Saint Naum who was the first Slavic monk. For life, he was translating Christian books, teaching people about Christianity, helping them in every situation. Nowadays, he is known as a miracle worker, the saint who cures people with various ailments, especially mental illness. If you really believe, when you put your ear to his grave, you will hear his heartbeat.

Monastery of Saint Naum Ohrid Macedonia

The bay of bones is another interesting site to visit. It is an archaeological site, where about 6,000 wooden rods of various sizes and shapes were found in the lake at depths between 3 and 5m. The settlement itself is a replica of the prehistoric cottages, made of mud and reeds located at that place because at that time the lake was of much lower water levels.  The objects, that were found in the water, are exposed, too. Each cottage is furnished similarly but in some way differently, so visiting every cottage and taking pictures in them is unavoidable.

DAY 11Journey Ohrid – Tirana, Albania's glorious capital

After breakfast, it is time to say goodbye to this warm and charming town of Ohrid and the Republic of Macedonia and to continue our journey to the last country of our tour- Albania and its capital – Tirana.

Albanian flag between traveler's accessories on old vintage mapTirana is the economic, industrial, commercial and cultural centre of Albania. The city is also the administrative centre of the Tirana area. The area of Tirana was inhabited by several Illyrian tribes but had no importance within Illyria. Indeed, it was annexed by Rome and became an integral part of the Roman Empire following the Illyrian Wars. The heritage of that period is still evident and represented by the Mosaics of Tirana. It can be said that the city Tirana was founded by the Ottomans in 1614, as a town of Tehran. For the past 400 years, the city has combined Turkish, Italian and Russian architecture and can offer tourists plenty of historical value as well as vibrant nightlife.

Since its founding, the city has developed rapidly thanks to its convenient location on the important caravan roads. The city has always been a place of the clash between Albanians and Ottomans. During World War II, Tirana was under Italian occupation until 1944 when it was taken over by German troops. After the liberation of Tirana in 1946, the democratic government moved here and proclaimed the People’s Republic of Albania. In the following decades, many industrial and cultural institutions were built with the assistance and support of the Soviet Union.

Skanderbeg Monument in Tirana AlbaniaYou will take a walk along the famous Skanderbeg Square, built in the style of classicism. The statue of the national hero Skanderbeg is dominant on the plaza, made in 1968 on the 500th anniversary of his death. Many important buildings including Tirana The City Hall, the Parliament, the Government, Bank of Albania are all located on the square.

Clock tower and Et'hem bey mosque in Tirana AlbaniaConsidering that Muslims are the majority of people, The Hadji Et’hem Bey Mosque is also a significant Islamic monument, constructed at the beginning of the 19th century. Closed under communist rule, the mosque reopened as a house of worship in 1991. Arabesque outside and in the portico depict trees, waterfalls and bridges – motifs rarely seen in Islamic art. Next to the mosque was built the clock tower in 1822. Initially, it was not high, but the residents of Tirana decided to raise it and now the height is 35 m and it houses the German clock.

The cathedral of St Paul is also one of the stops on the walking tour. It is the largest Catholic cathedral in Albania, built-in 2001 in a postmodern style. It doesn’t look like traditional Catholic churches at all.

National History Museum in Tirana AlbaniaYou will pass the Pyramid, Prime Minister building, Palace of congresses, Mother Teresa Square, Archaeological Museum (there are presented many archaeological discoveries since the Stone Age up to the Medieval), Presidential palace, Ex-Blloku (which used to be the most beautiful and protected zone were the ex-communist leader’s families lived) and visit the Cold War corner (one Bunker, part of famous Spac Political Prison, and a piece from Berlin Wall). DAY 12Tirana – Kruje - Shkoder

After breakfast at 8 o’clock, a local guide will meet you at the hotel and take you to our next stop – the intimate Ottoman little town: Krujë, 31 km away from Tirana and a place rich in history. It is famous as a place that has been populated since the 3rd century BC, as a home to the eponymous Alban tribe and the previously mentioned national hero of Albania – Skanderbeg.

Castle of Kruje Skanderbeg Museum Kruje AlbaniaKruje Castle and the relatively new Skanderbeg National Museum hosted inside is definitely the most attractive part of the town. In the past, it was the headquarters of Skanderbeg, the “Dragon of Albania,” an Albanian nobleman and a prominent fighter against the Ottomans. It contains artefacts dating back to the 15th century, with exhibits arranged to honour Skanderberg and his military feats. Items on display include paintings, armour, maps and stone and wood engravings. The highlight of the collection is a replica of Skanderberg’s famous helmet topped with a goat head. The ethnographic museum is considered one of the best-organized museums in Albania. Visitors can walk through a handful of the 15 rooms, including the living room, children’s room and kitchen. Exhibits include olive oil processing tools, pottery and both Catholic and Muslim clothing. It also offers scenic views of the surrounding area.

After famous Krujë, discover the culture and sights of Shkodra, one of the oldest and most fascinating cities in Albania. It was the capital of Illyria in 3 th BC. DAY 13 Skhoder – Ulcinj – Bar – Budva

After breakfast at 8 o’clock, we leave Shkoder and Albania and drive again to Montenegro. This time we will explore coastal part of the country, starting from Ulcinj, one of the biggest tourist centres on the Adriatic coast. With the warm and crystal clear wáter, a large number of sunny days, a great offer of water activities, the sandy beaches among which is the most beautiful Velika plaza – the longest beach in Montenegro and with its 13km one of the longest in Europe – and with the Old town, with its huge walls, over 2500 years old, Ulcinj attracts more and more tourist every year. Ottomans had the major impact in this área and that is why even these days you can feel the eastern spirit in the town.

Ulcinj Adriatic sea MontenegroAfter a short break, we move to the Old town Bar, located in the southeast of Montenegro. Located on Londša hill, at the foot of Mount Rumija, The Old Town Bar is the largest urban agglomeration in the ruins of Montenegro. Its streets are guides through the ages, from the Greek colonies to the Middle Ages, the rule of the Venetians, the Turkish period and all the way to the new era. You will have time to explore the remains of the Venetian palaces, Turkish bath and clock-tower, as well as aqueduct, the orthodox and catholic churches. You can climb up to the Citadel, from where opens a great view of the valley with olive trees and Rumija Mountain behind the town. The narrow cobbled streets, lined with souvenirs and funky eateries enchant every visitor.

Ruins in Old Town Bar

The journey continues along scenic road next to the Adriatic sea. Check-in the hotel in Budva.

Budva is the metropole of tourism in Montenegro, with the 2000 years old town settlement. According to the legend, it was founded by the son of the Phoenician king – Kadmo and his wife Harmonia. For about 5 centuries, it was under the influence of Venetians and that is the reason why Budva Old town looks like the old town of Kotor and Dubrovnik.

You will see Church of John Baptist, Church of St Sabbah Appointed and the church of Holy Trinity, walk over the square of poets and square of salt. Then the oldest part of the town – Citadela, with a fantastic panoramic view of the Adriatic sea, Saint Nikola Island and a new part of the town.
