Durmitor is a massif located in Northern Montenegro and part of the Dinaric Alps. It became a national park in 1958 and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980. On the territory of 39,000 ha of the protected natural zone, there are 48 mountain peaks at an altitude of 2,000m and the highest peak – Bobotov Kuk (2,523m) and 18 mountain lakes. There are also four canyons here – canyon Nevidio, Piva River Canyon, Susica River Canyon and Tara River Canyon and 748 mountain springs of fresh water. Tara River Canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world, with its depth of 1333m! There are a huge number of marked hiking trails, from easy to demanding trails, that meet the needs of every visitor.
Apart from the peaks, the particular value of this mountain is the pristine glacial lakes, at altitudes above 1500 m. A walk to any of these lakes is a wonderful way to get to know the mountain and breathe a lot of fresh air passing through the pastures and dense forests reflected in the surface of the lake.

As mentioned, Durmitor Mountain has 48 peaks over 2000 m with a lot of marked hiking trails and that’s the reason why many people decide to visit this area. But there are many visitors who love spending time in nature, without making a lot of efforts. This tour is a perfect choice for them – easy walking through the forest and meadows of Durmitor mountain, breathing fresh air and admiring the unspoilt nature around you.
This tour is an easy walking tour to three scenic glacial lakes – Barno lake, Zminje lake and Black lake. Shortly said – 5-6 hours in pure beauty and nature.
Barno lake (Swampy lake) is a small shallow lake, located in the middle of the spacious peatland and surrounded by coniferous forest on all sides at the altitude of 1489 m. The maximum depth is only 1 m. Most of the surface of the lake and its shores are covered with dense wetlands.
Zminje lake – a small lake, hidden in the depths of the forest at the altitude of 1520 m and with a maximum depth is 7.7 meters. It is formed in the area of dense spruce forest, overlooking the Crvena Greda peak and nearby peaks.
Black lake – located at an altitude of 1416 m at the foot of Medjed and consists of two lakes: Small and Great Lake, that are connected by water. It is the largest, the most beautiful and the most visited of the 18 glacial lakes in Durmitor.

Zminje lake is a glacial gem hidden in a spruce forest, which impresses all visitors with its wild beauty. The local guide will tell you some facts about the history of the lake as well as legends related to it. Short break for rest and having a lunch box before the walk to the most beautiful lake in NP Durmitor.
Black lake is the largest glacial lake in this area, surrounded by impressive peaks and dramatic landscapes. The best way to get to know them better Black lake is to have a walk along the 3.5 km long path around the edge of the entire lake. Along the way, you’ll see info boards telling you about the plants and animals that live in the area and some of the history of the area. During the walk, you will enjoy the majestic view of Black lake and reflections on its surface as well as Medjed peak which rises proudly behind the lake.
Walk toward the centre of the town Zabljak, passing by The Natural Museum of Durmitor which you can visit immediately or later on.
